Changing jobs can be the most stressful and annoying process that people go through, and yet most of us change jobs 7 to 10 times during our careers. It’s true to say that most of us sometime come to the conclusion that our job isn’t suiting our needs and that changing jobs would be a good idea. Is it a good idea though? Not only is it stressful but you may just end up worse than before. You may think it is an exciting endeavor, but it brings a lot of “what-ifs”. What if the new boss is a pain in the butt? What if they don’t like your ideas or even you as a person? What if you fail? What if the company decides to lay off and the new employees are the first to go? There can be many questions and you really can’t be sure of a whole lot.
Before you move on you need to take some time off and list the reasons for moving on and see if you can fix it. If you are unsure of your reasoning for seeking a new job, check out some of the reasons why people take the leap:
Job Dissatisfaction This is probably the number one reason why people leave one job for another. If your job is not fulfilling and you are not happy than find a job that really fulfills you. But first find out its cause and work with your employer to improve your current situation. For instance if you are dissatisfied with your current job because you are constantly under stress may be its best to take a couple day’s off just to blow of steam and when you get back tell your boss about the situation and try to work something out.
Job Burnout Burnout is a terrible thing! May be it’s because your job is repetitive or routine or may be you’re just bored because you have been doing this too long. A good way to solve this is probably to make a lateral move to another position within your current employers. You might well have a good reputation where you are currently, and that is something that takes a long time to acquire. May be your boss can loan you to a different department for six months or even rotate you through different jobs just to keep your job fresh and interesting.
More Money Money is good incentive to keep one motivated and happy on the job. If you feel that you are underpaid why not bring it up politely to your supervisor and see you can get an adjustment. In the end if despite your efforts you can’t get a raise than may be you should think about other options.
In need of a new challenge There might be nothing wrong with your current job but it may be that you just need a new challenge. Before you move on see if there is management training or job diversification if your company. You could even volunteer for extra projects just to show that you can handle more responsibility.
Its important to put In an effort to make it work before you decide to leave. If despite your efforts you feel that your current job can’t provide what you are looking for or you can’t see you’re self with the company in the foreseeable future than its better to resign respectfully and look for another job. But what ever you choose make sure you continuously update your skills, pay attention to what’s happening in your industry and continuously expand your networks as this will play a role in helping you get your future jobs.
